WRESTLING FAQS

Have a question? Visit the contact us page, send us a message, and we will get back to you asap!

WHY WRESTLING?

Wrestling is the most mentally and physically rewarding sport there is. The best thing is anybody can wrestle! Wrestling has several divisions for each age group and within those divisions are numerous weight classes. Wrestling is also a coed sport allowing both boys and girls to compete. This club allows wrestlers to become familiar with the program they will be a part of when they are older. Wrestlers and their families can expect to work with several Riverton High School coaches and wrestlers. This structure will help build a true community feel and make for a smooth transition onto the high school team!

HOW DOES WRESTLING WORK?

Tournaments will give wrestlers 3 matches per tournament. Each wrestler must weigh in before competing to ensure that wrestlers are in the same weight class. A match lasts three periods. In high school the periods are two minutes long, in junior high they are one minute and thirty seconds or one minute depending on the grade. Offensively a wrestler scores points by taking an opponent down from their feet into a position where they are being controlled like on their stomach or knees. A wrestler also scores points by putting an opponent on their back. Defensively, a wrestler scores points by escaping from an opponent who is in control, or by reversing an opponent and gaining control. If a wrestler is able to hold their opponent down for two seconds on both shoulder blades they win by pin and the match is over.

HOW WILL WE COMMUNICATE?

We have a Facebook group called Wolfpack WC, and a profile called Riverton Wrestling. We are also on Instagram, our handle is @rivertonwrestling. We will also have a remind101 app that allows messaging between all parents and coaches. Finally, this website will be updated frequently to provide easy access to information. To be a part of the remind please text the number 81010 with the message @wpwc20.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

The 4th-8th season runs from November 3rd to January 26th. We practice three times a week from 5:30-7. Every Saturday there is a competition tournament at a different location throughout Utah. You can practice and compete as much, or as little, as your schedule allows.

ISN'T WRESTLING DANGEROUS?

No. Statistically speaking more injuries occur to basketball players and cheerleaders then to wrestlers. It is one of few sports where there is a protective mat underneath you at all times! Please note that it is still possible for injuries to occur.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE FEE?

3 practices a week which adds up to around 32 practices total. You will also receive a Wolfpack WC shirt, shorts, and a competition singlet. Most importantly you will be able to have a ton of fun, and develop a passion for the sport! Please note that you must pay for a USA wrestling card and entry into tournaments separate. Our coaches are more than happy to help with this.

WHAT IS WOLFPACK ELITE?

Wolfpack Elite is meant for our advanced wrestlers who have strong competitive experience. This group will, practice at a different time, move at a faster pace, and will be more intense. Wolfpack Elite practices will run start on Monday, November 8th. If a wrestler is showing strong ability in the regular Wolfpack group they may be invited to begin training with Wolfpack Elite.

CAN GIRLS WRESTLE?

Yes! Girls are welcomed and encouraged to join our club. Last year we had three girls on our youth team. We have a full high school girls team of 15 wrestlers. However, due to time and facility restraints we do not have an all girls club. The boys and girls are paired together before they hit high school. Most tournaments will have a girls division so girls will only be competing against other girls.
